Key man: Alan Stubbs
With David Moyes switching the accent from defence to
attack, Stubbs and his fellow defenders are likely to be
stretched to the limit this season. Hero is a vastly
overworked word in football but having recovered from two
episodes of testicular cancer, Stubbs fits the description.
Stubbs was brought up on Merseyside as a diehard Evertonian
and fully identifies with the fans. He can bring the ball
out from the back in a way which should appeal to Moyes
Coach: David Moyes
This intense, intelligent one-time Celtic apprentice may
never have hit the heights being a journeyman defender in
England’s lower divisions, but by his 30th birthday had
collected virtually every coaching badge going. Theory was
put into pleasing managerial practice at Preston, and he did
extremely well to keep Everton up last season

New boy: Richard
Wright
Has taken a pay cut to play first-team football. Capped at
every level by England, his rare Arsenal performances were
tainted by some blunders but David Moyes is convinced he has
bought the man who will be England’s next regular keeper
Money talk
Top earners Ferguson £35,000 Campbell £30,000,
Wright £30,000
Total wages bill
£26.33m
The Toffees have paid above their station in recent
years. Their wage bill is the eighth highest in the
Premiership, and care is needed because this adds up to 80%
of their turnover (£32.85m)
Where are they now?
Barry Horne Joe Royle’s original Dog of War is still
snapping at authority’s heels in his new capacity as a
full-time union man. He is chairman of the Professional
Footballers’ Association
